St Andrews Caledonian Pipe Band

St Andrews Caledonian Pipe Band

Formed in 1933, St Andrews Caledonian Pipe Band is Tasmania's first and oldest pipe band. Historically the pipe band of the 2/12 Battalion, the band has provided over 70 years of service to Launceston and around the State. Celtic Force was created and developed by the band's current Pipe Major, John Ralph and sees the band performing annually in Launceston, Hobart, Burnie and Devonport (in Scottish Power: Lords of the Isles). After a triumphant tour of Scotland in 2005, the band is looking forward to Celtic Force 2006 to share some of the stories, songs and music from the Tour.

John de Jong

Tasmania's premier tenor, John de Jong, returns to Celtic Force after an accomplished year which has included performance in Scottish Power: Lords of the Isles (part of 10 Days on the Island) the 2005 World Expo in Nagoya, Japan and a reprise at Scottish Power: Lords of the Isles. John's performances in Celtic Force 2005 will include songs from his new solo album "My Celtic Journey".

Carol Devereaux

Carol has an impressive list of performances in stage musicals (most recently Miss Adelaide in the Launceston Musical Society's 2005 Season of Guys and Dolls) and makes her Celtic Force debut in 2006. The sweet-voiced soprano wowed audiences at Scottish Power: Lords of the Isles in Devonport and reprises her role in the cast with a few surprises thrown in. The combined singing items involving John de Jong and Carol Devereaux are a feature.

Col Francis

As one half of Tasmania's most successful musical duo, Col Francis was a welcome addition to St Andrews Caledonian Pipe Band's 2005 Tour of Scotland. His strong vocal style, accompanied by percussive guitar playing are on display as he performs classic and new Celtic songs. This includes the first-ever performance in Australia of Orkney Anthem, which Col learnt during performances in Kirkwall City, Orkney.

Andrew Colrain

Andrew is one of Tasmania's most gifted MCs and, in his fourth year with Celtic Force, delivers another memorable performance in this role and exercises his other talents: comedy, singing and playing the bodhran (traditional irish drum). The one-man entertainment unit has become a much-anticipated part of the Celtic Force cast.

Ben Austin

The ever-increasing accomplishments of Ben Austin continue to amaze. Ben is fast-becoming a veteran of the stage and his performances of well-known and original compositions have left local and international audiences stunned and amazed. In his fifth season of Celtic Force, we're sure he'll do the same for you, too. In 2005, Ben released his first solo recording 'In Black and White' and performed in Nagoya, Japan on two occasions at the World Expo.

Celtic Force House Band

Since 2002, the Celtic Force House Band concept has produced some marvelously diverse combinations of performers who make up the 'non pipe band' Celtic musicians of Celtic Force. In 2006, Kimberley Wright is joined by Stephen Henty as these two classically-trained violinists turn their hand to Celtic-style fiddle playing. The cast welcomes back Celtic guitarist, Graham Edgar, returning from Scotland to show his fine style on acoustic guitar. John Ralph rounds out the line-up of the Celtic Force House Band (Mark V!) on tin whistle and Scottish smallpipes. Expect some memorable, foot-tapping music!

Glenorchy City Concert Brass

Members of the Glenorchy City Concert Brass will be joining the cast of Celtic Force for the third time to add new facets to the show's music. In this year, the band will feature the ensemble performance of 'Cry of the Celts' including new choreography by the Palmer School of Irish Dance. It will be a brand new performance work and will only be seen at Celtic Force 2006.

These are just a few of the performers that will be entertaining you at Celtic Force 2006. It’s a brand new cast with a fresh look, but retains the energy and vitality that has become part of our show. We look forward to seeing you there!
